History

The Forsythe Avenue Church of Christ in Monroe, Louisiana was a mission carried out by the area’s "Mother Church," the Jackson Street congregation.

The first service at Forsythe was held July 17, 1966, in the new church building of contemporary design, arguably the most beautiful among area Churches of Christ.

E. C. ("Brother Mac") McKenzie, who surrendered his pulpit at the Jackson Street congregation after 8 years of service there, became the new congregation’s first preacher.

In 1967, the congregation completed a building program that created eight additional rooms for Bible class study.

Bernie Bawcom followed McKenzie as preacher of the congregation.

Harold Hunt followed Bernie Bawcom.

Don Glover, a native of Houston, Texas, became minister in July 1975, arriving at the congregation from the White Station Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee. He ended his term at Forsythe Avenue Church of Christ on August 29, 2004

Tommy Inman, a native of Texas, became part-time youth minister and song leader in July of 2001. Tommy is head of the Bible Department of Ouachita Christian School and came to the congregation from White's Ferry Road Church of Christ. In June of 2005, Tommy was named Associate Minister and continues to serve in that capacity.

Rob Callicott, a native of Louisiana who grew up in Houston, became minister in September 2004 and continues to serve as minister.

Jason Barnard, a native of Ouachita Parish, became youth minister in June 2005 and continues to serve as youth minister.

Ouachita Christian School (OCS), now a large and influential private institution with its own impressive facility in Monroe, started its operation at the Forsythe church. Later, the White’s Ferry Road and Jackson Street congregations shared this responsibility, also offering classes at their facilities.

Forsythe continued to grow. In 1986, a building program was completed, resulting in a major addition to the auditorium and additional classes.

The congregation carries on an ambitious local and foreign ministry, one that includes helping the poor and orphaned and destitute and lost.

Charter elders of the congregation were Simon Johnson (deceased), Otis Johnson (deceased), and Max Riley (retired),

Elders added to their number included Jim Williams (deceased), W. L. (Jack) Howard (deceased), Finis Fisher (deceased), Tommy Barker (moved), Richard Myers (moved), and Rudy Burns (retired).
